Early Days and Rise
Born on April 30, 1987, in Bansod, Nagpur, Maharashtra, Rohit's cricketing journey began in the bustling city of Mumbai. Early on, his coaches recognized the unique talent he possessed. Making his mark in the domestic circuit playing for Mumbai, it didn't take long before he was donning the Indian blue.
Rohit made his debut for the Indian team in the T20 format during the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007. His ODI debut followed soon after. However, it was a testing period for him, filled with inconsistent performances and the challenges of establishing himself in a star-studded lineup.
Transformation into an Opener
For the first few years of his international career, Rohit played in the middle order. But everything changed in 2013 when he was asked to open the innings alongside Shikhar Dhawan during the Champions Trophy. The move was a masterstroke. Rohit not only found his groove but also began churning out big scores with astonishing regularity.
From then on, he has gone on to score three double centuries in ODIs – a feat no other cricketer has achieved. His highest score of 264 against Sri Lanka remains the highest individual score in ODI cricket.
Making a Mark in Test Cricket
While Rohit's white-ball credentials were never in doubt, his initial foray into Test cricket was met with challenges. Dropped from the Test side due to inconsistent runs, many believed that Rohit might remain a limited-overs specialist. However, much like his transformation in ODIs, a change in batting position in Tests, from the middle order to opening the innings, revitalized his red-ball career.
